Electronics Assembly Technician – Custom Test Equipment & Prototype Builds.
Location: Westfield, IN (Indianapolis Metro Area)
Department: Production / Assembly
Reports to: Project Engineer / Project Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time
Experience Level: Mid-to-Senior (5–10 years)
Job Summary:
Ball Systems is hiring an Electronics Assembly Technician to build advanced custom test equipment, prototype fixtures, and rack-mount test cabinets for customers in avionics, military/defense, and medical equipment industries. In this role, you'll work hands-on alongside a Project Engineer or Project Manager to assemble, wire, modify, and test electromechanical systems from drawings, schematics, and customer specifications.
This is a strong fit for an experienced electronics technician, electromechanical assembler, or test equipment builder who enjoys variety, takes pride in clean workmanship, and thrives in a custom-build environment where no two projects look alike. If you've spent your career reading schematics, crimping connectors, building harnesses, and bringing one-off systems to life, we want to talk to you.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Perform electrical and mechanical assembly of custom prototype fixtures and various styles of test equipment.
- Read and interpret mechanical assembly drawings, electrical schematics, customer specifications, Statements of Work (SOW), project travelers, and time reports.
- Build and wire control panels to specification.
- Perform mechanical modifications including drilling, cutting, and fitting custom hardware.
- Test functional performance of electromechanical devices using DMMs, oscilloscopes, and power supplies.
- Build custom cable assemblies using a variety of OEM contact crimp tooling.
- Assemble custom 19" rack-mount cabinet test stands.
- Assemble OEM and custom interconnect systems including Pogo Pin test fixtures and Virginia Panel Corp (VPC) hardware.
- Perform wire tinning, soldering, and (preferred) printed circuit board (PCB) soldering.
- Support manual assembly during small-scale production of electronic devices for avionic, military, and medical applications.
- Operate standard electronic assembly and soldering tools.
- Inspect wiring installations and custom mechanical parts to ensure quality.
- Maintain a high standard of quality and craftsmanship in every phase of production.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience: Ideally 5–10 years in electronics assembly, electromechanical assembly, or a related technical role.
- Education: Associate's or Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics Engineering Technology (EET), or an Electronics Technical Degree (ITT Tech, Ivy Tech, or equivalent technical school).
- Technical Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
- Hands-on proficiency with crimping, wire termination, soldering, and harness building.
- Comfortable using DMMs, oscilloscopes, and power supplies for functional testing.
- Interpersonal Skills: Strong team orientation and ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, project managers, and fellow technicians.
Preferred Qualifications:
- IPC certifications (IPC-A-610, IPC/WHMA-A-620, J-STD-001) for soldering and cable/harness workmanship.
- Printed circuit board (PCB) hand soldering experience.
- Experience with Virginia Panel Corp (VPC) interconnects or Pogo Pin test fixtures.
- Background in avionics, defense, aerospace, or medical device assembly.
- Familiarity with ESD-safe work practices.
- Prior experience in a custom or low-volume / high-mix production environment.
Skills and Attributes:
The right candidate is highly motivated, detail-oriented, and craftsmanship-driven. You enjoy variety, you're comfortable picking up a new fixture or interconnect system you haven't worked with before, and you take ownership of the quality of every assembly that leaves your bench. You communicate clearly with your assigned engineer, ask the right questions before cutting or drilling, and work cleanly and methodically.
You're a team player who shares knowledge with your peers, supports tight project schedules, and takes pride in seeing custom test equipment go out the door working exactly as designed.
Equal Opportunity Employer:
Applicants MUST be US Citizens or CURRENT Green Card holders due to our military contracts. We cannot sponsor visas.
